title : the promise Wow! Its a new day, Sam thinks as he opens his eyes and lets out a yawn. Is it me or is the sun exceptionally beautiful today? He says to himself. Humming happily, he goes to tbe bathroom. Whoa! He says, looking at his reflection in the mirror. I sure am a handsome dude. Dontcha think so? He winks at his reflection in the mirror. He brushes his teeth afterwards and does his exercises. He goes back to the bedroom, kneels by the bed, closes his eyes in prayer. Okay, this feels weird. I cant even remember the last time I prayed, a voice within him says. Oh, cmon! Dont be such an infidel. Today isnt like any other day. Its special! Its the day you have been waiting for for a long time. Another voice in his head says. Choosing to go with the second voice he says a short prayer, thanking God for life and asking him for the courage to go through with what he planned today. Next, he picks up his phone and dials her number. Lexie, the gift of his dreams. The one person who sees past his gruffy attitude and sees the cute, little, soft hearted baby that he is, not that he minds anyway. About 10 more hours to get ready. He quickly haves his bath, gets dressed and practically runs out to get things ready. 7:15pm. His heart is beating so loudly he wonders if the neighbors can hear it. He is so nervous he begins to feel nauseous. He looks at his phone for the thousandth time in twenty minutes. He dials her number again but cuts the call before it rings. Take a deep breath, he tells himself. 7:50pm She has not even called! Did she change her mind? He wonders. Of course she didnt, if she did, she would have called. He made up his mind to call. He dials her number but the call diverts to Voicemail. He paces up and down, checks the delicacies he prepared, leaving no stone unturned.. 7:59pm He goes to stand at the door, waiting for her and watching the second hand of his wristwatch approach 12. 8:00pm He looks up from his watch and his heart stops. Lexie, clad in the beautiful pink and black dress she wore the day she first told him she loved him, walks up to meet him, her hips swaying beautifully. Waiting for me? Lexie asks with a wink. Oh no, just wanted to have some fresh air. Sam replies. Lexie laughs, his heart stops for a second. Are we going to stand here all day or are gonna let me in on the surprise? Yeah, lets go in. But before we do, he brings out a black piece of cloth from his back pocket and blindfolds her. Hmmmnnn, she says, Im loving it already. Sam opens the door and ushers her in. He closes the door behind them. He leans close to her and whispers in her ear, I love you, Alexandra Peters. I love you to Samuel. How much? She giggles and replies, To the sky and back. More than there are fishes in the sea and higher than the moon. He removes the blindfold. Her hands flies to her mouth, blood rushes to her cheeks. In all the 4 years they have been dating, Sam has never seen Lexie speechless. Just then, his phone rings. He checks the caller ID. Its your mum. He says to Lexie. He picks. Samuel! The person on the other end of the line cries. Calm down maam, whats wrong? Why are you crying? Its... its... Lexie. Whats wrong? Did you guys have a fight? That will not be surprising. Lexie and her mum have always had their quarrels but they always manage to get back together within few minutes. No. She was driving this evening and had an accident. Shes .... shes dead. He could hear his world crumbling. That can not be true, Lexie is here, with me Its true, he hears from behind him. He turns to see Lexie, crying, and smiling. How? Who are you? He asks, dread forming a huge ball in his throat. She smiles and says I kept my promise.
