tl;dr: go to https://mayday.us/ and give them money. I just did. [hat-tip Marc] Normally talk of campaign finance reform invokes my despair, after looking at this approach I feel like there is a glimmer of hope in this campaign, and one worth nurturing. It goes like this, as marc so eloquently put it: Government is messed up. Most people believe that. I believe, as do many others, that the root problem is the influence of money in politics, and its not going to fix itself. Money will always be involved in politics, but its influence can be mitigated. Law professor and activist Larry Lessig has a plan to do something about this. He wants to create a SuperPAC with the goal of funding candidates who believe in true reform. Hes more than aware of the recent Supreme Court precedents limiting regulation of donations, so he has been working on ideas which will work even within those constraints. Are his plans concrete today? No: they are working incrementally, and have smaller plans for 2014 in anticipation of learning from that for 2016. Is this idea guaranteed to work? Absolutely not: its a hail mary idea. Why am I supporting this? Because Ive been following Larrys work for years, I like what he has to say, and I trust him to do the right thing here. Mayday PAC raised $1m from small donors in 12 days in May, which was matched by a handful of selected donors. Mayday PAC is now in the midst of a second campaign to raise $5m from small donors, which will also be matched. If you think government doesnt represent you as well as it could; if you think that the incentives around elections are wrong; if you want to do something to fix this, go to https://mayday.us/, donate today, and then reshare this, or post about #maydayus. Theres a decent FAQ at https://mayday.us/faq/ which answers some questions in more detail.
