top eight (should be ten, but i also should be doing my schoolwork) influential books in my life, in no particular order (with a sort of description to explain the feel of the books): 1. veronica - mary gaitskill disorienting & nostalgic for a complicated past/the pursuit of ways of feeling through culture & fashion, time & memory, surface & self 2. the perks of being a wallflower - stephen chbosky numbingly familiar, distantly upsetting, & dazingly happy 3. the casual vacancy - j k rowling harsh characterization of a troubled town/passionless relationships & urgency 4. redefining realness - janet mock vulnerability & strength, political & personal, critical & coming of age/the importance of disclosure, shattered silence for trans folks 5. anne of green gables - lucy maud montgomery lovely, poetic & warm girlhood & womanhood/endearing stories of delight & unwavering devotion 6. the pact - jodi picoult an overwhelming state of grief & loss/regretting something you have no way of reversing/unspeakable knowledge 7. the catcher in the rye - j d salinger floating/horrifyingly plain/clinging on to a sense of self in relation to youth & authority 8. harry potter (yes all 7) - j k rowling i cried & i was in the bath
