totally arbitrary question- ghosts! Bear with me. Ghosts are almost always seen as horror entities- theyre scary, haunted places are scary, ghost stories are scary, so forth so forth. But why? Most monsters have some reason theyre threatening- vampires and werewolf will eat you, demons will drag you to hell, aliens will invade the earth. They may also be metaphors for basic fears- vampire the fear of the psychopath, werewolf the fear of the predator, aliens the fear of the outsider,and so forth. But ghosts are, mostly, just people. Indeed,theyre actively less dangerous then the living,as they cant physically attack you and are normally confined to a single house. And they arent metaphors for any obvious fear- they actively undermine the fear of death. Seeing a ghost would be absolute proof your deceased loved ones are fine and death is not the end. So why did they become so associated with fear, worldwide? What fears are they targeting?
