traveled 127 miles this week on my cross country trek, mainly along the Jersey Shore, taking me from turnerville, New Jersey, to Point Pleasant, New Jersey, with stops in Atlantic City, Mystic Island and Toms River. Atlantic City is know for its casino gambling, which was legalized in 1976. It is located on the Absecon Island on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. In 1883 salt water taffy was conceived there by David Bradley. Boxer Mike Tyson had most of his fights in Atlantic City in the 1980s. The Atlantic City Boardwalk was the first boardwalk in the UNited States, it opened June 26, 1870. Mystic Island started in the 1960s as a waterfront community with mostly vacation bungalows; in recent years many have been replaced by homes. Toms River , most is located on the mainland but Dover Beaches North and South are on the Barnegat Peninsula, a long, narrow barrier peninsula that separates Barnegat Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The 1979 movie, The Amityville Horror was filmed in Toms River. Point Pleasant is bounded on the north by Manasquan River, the east by Point Pleasant Beach and Bay Head , the south by Beaver Dam Creek and the west by Brick Township. Point Pleasant Canal which opened in 1925, is at the northern end of the Intracoastal waterway. it has two lift bridges over the canal that can be opened as many as 300 times a day during the summer to allow boats to pass. I am 3,981 miles into my journey, will hit 3,000 miles this week!
