tribuneindia/2013/20130906/ldh1.htm Wildlife Protection Bill Dr Sandeep KJain has written to VSP Singh, Joint Director, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, suggesting an amendment in the draft of the Wildlife Protection Bill 2013. Earlier, Presiding Officer of the Standing Committee Dr T Subbarammi Reddy, MP (Rajya Sabha) had suggested that automatically shed peacock tail-feathers may not be prohibited to be used for religious purposes. The government may issue special permits to the followers of Jain saints, to collect the shed tail-feathers of peacocks for its use in religious rituals for saints. However, commercial transactions may be banned with immediate effect according to proposed amendment bill prohibiting to sell or purchase or offer to sell or transfer trophy of feathers of Birds protected under schedule I of Wildlife Protection Act 1972(amended). He has written that those Jain monks have been using a thing called Pitchchi made up of peacock feathers to keep away the insects away from their body, without harming them since time immemorial. The feathers are collected by the monks when these are shed their tail feathers every year. — TNS
