unison.org.hk/lettercampaign-en.php Petition to the CE for improving the Chinese language education of ethnic minorities This letter petition aims at arousing Mr. CY Leung’s attention on the public’s concern Chinese language education for ethnic minorities. We appeal to your support to make a difference together. Dear Chief Executive, Ethnic minority children are part of the Hong Kong family and deserve equal opportunities. For over a decade, advocates have been asking the Education Bureau to improve Chinese language education for ethnic minorities. However, the current Chinese language education policy still fails to equip ethnic minorities with adequate Chinese skills. Low Chinese proficiencies also exacerbate the problem of intergenerational poverty and in-work poverty among ethnic minority communities. The Education Bureau has turned a blind eye to the needs of these children, and I am disappointed to see this attitude of the Government in educating future pillars of our society. I write to ask you to fulfil your promise in your election manifesto and set the timeline and budget for implementing a “Chinese as a Second Language” policy as soon as possible. The government should also eliminate the racial segregation effect found in many schools, and facilitate integration of ethnic minorities into the fabric of the Hong Kong society.
