up in the foothills when i crawl on hand and knee beneath the canopy, between the young cedars, i dare not dally. a hand will slip down into the loose black dirt and grab a hold of a root. my leg will work its way thru the arch of an exposed one, my knee hooking and clamping, anchored with no tools within reach to pry it loose and then the other hand and the other leg and my body will twist. bones will snap and my spine will splinter as i work my way snakelike into the contours of the trunk. eyebrows turn to bark. my mouth into the home of a hibernation in need. my eyes into seeds. beneath the canopy, between the young cedars, the tolls are all tallied.
