very distressing stories. It all adds up to terrible misuse of human labor and potential. There should be a national policy to get people like these back to work. Until the 1980s, government and labor worked together to motivate and, yes, require, business to hire groups of good workers who were being overlooked either through intentional discrimination or simply groupthink. Think women, or no Irish need apply, or Asians. This country is supposed to prohibit age discrimination, but it doesnt really do anything to stand inthe way of businesses that redline whole groups just because they want to, or becuasetheyvegotten bad advice. Wher did the whole trend to blackball job seekers with bad credit come from? Thecredit reporting agencies decided they wanted to make money selling credit reports for use in vetting job applicants. As if people without work shouldnt be having trouble paying bills. If business wants to hire workers from abroad, make them hire some of the qualified workers who are already here. This country long ago stopped considering the needs of anyone bu business in its economic decisions. Asks a result, this country is becoming harder and harder for the middle class and the poor. This Labor Day, let us remember that all so us who labor deserve policies that protect our employment, and our wages.
