via Brian Glasscock Written by a friend, and totally on point: The new slogan of the UC should be All of this has happened before and will happen again. 5 years ago, proposed tuition hikes of 32% led to perhaps the biggest student revolt in a generation. Buildings across the state were occupied and barricaded by students on the same day, students were tased and beaten and arrested by campus police. In years since, this week, more and more students have been arrested, beaten, threatened with expulsion. 3 years ago today, campus police sent UC-Davis students to the hospital with chemical burns in their throats from military grade pepper spray, in a now infamous event. Yet nothing has changed. UC police still attack and harass student activists with impunity. UC regents still drain the coffers of the public university with impunity. UC administrators still shift the focus of the university to a profit model, cutting humanities and core courses to expand military and pharmaceutical research, with impunity. And now, UC President Janet Napolitano, former head of Homeland Security, responsible at one time for deporting the parents of UC students, is proposing more massive tuition increases. All of this has happened before. But the question remains, does all of this have to happen again?
