via: Father-Chris Pietraszko Feeling guilty is a gift, but it is something that is not meant to be held onto. Guilt is a wound in the soul that causes us inner-turmoil, and it is a sign that we are filled with love. If we did not experience regret, it would mean that our egotistical actions that harm others would be of no importance to us, and therefore our lack of regret would be a sign of apathy towards the wounds of others. As I said, however, guilt is not meant to be something that endures in our soul, but rather it is be healed by repentance (turning away from that sin, apologizing, and attempting to suffer what is just for the sin committed) and lastly, to seek mercy from the One who is best at giving it: God. When we hold onto our guilt by justifying our actions, the lie buried into the depth of our subconscious leads to shame which festers all sorts of evils in our lives. It can cause deep anger, terrible anxiety, despondency, intense fear, and a hedonistic life that spends every waking moment clinging to what makes us feel good never allowing us to enter into the maturity of being good, despite how we feel. But for those who are brave and can admit of their sin and not avoid the pain of our wounded soul, healing is all the more possible when we turn to Christ and find a loving saviour who embraces us, and becomes proud of us, for our love shown forth in our regret and our sorrow for sin.
