via Nomi of Babes Against Biotech These are my personal Primary Election picks and thoughts on August 9th primary elections in Hawaii if I had to vote in every race. Races you dont see here go straight to the General election in November. I will update undecided races when I decide. Aloha! State Senate: Senate 1 Im thinking Wendell Kaehuaea (only because opponent Kahele has taken so much GMO+chem cash) Plus the guy has run 20 times, shoots, and against Gil Kahele, maybe its time to give Wendell a chance. Senate 4 Lorraine Inouye hands down! Senate 5 I need to know more about both Gil and Christys positions on GE but Gil is endorsed by Sierra Club and based on Karen Chuns glowing recommendation I can at least say Karen Chun supports Gil Keith-Agaran. Senate 6 Terez Amato absolutely. Dont expect to get anything regarding pesticide safety, regulation, disclosure or GMO labeling or restriction passed the Senate as long as her opponent career politician GMO fave and cash recipient Roz Baker is still Chair of Consumer Protection. Senate 12 Neither? Galuteria takes GMO cash and introduced the Hawaii Monsanto Protection Act but he introduced SB1 for marriage equality. His opponent Carl Middleton is great on environmental issues but opposes marriage equality. Senate 21 Maile Shimabukuro all the way Senate 23 No thanks. Meyers and Fales comments against marriage equality turned my stomach and made me question what year it was. Hawaii House of Representatives: District 2 Edwin Miranda District 4 Leilani Bronson-Crelly District 5 Richard Creagan District 6 Nicole Lowen District 9 James Kimo Apana (only because Woodson voted against marriage equality and Sierra Club is endorsing Apana) District 11 Kaniela Ing District 13 Toss up. Mele Carroll is great on environmental issues but voted against marriage equality and I dont know Barbara Haliniaks environmental positions well enough. District 15 Dylan Hooser District 16 Undecided. Not voting for Dee who introd Hawaii Monsanto Protection Act. Flores has best environmental positions IMHO but is Republican and opposes marijuana decriminalization or legalization but is most skeptical of Superferry out of all candidates. District 23 Nathaniel Kinney District 33 Not Arnold Wong. Sam Kong supports sunshine law for the legislature and opposes relaxing environmental regulations but I dont know enough about Tracy Arakakis environmental positions or Kongs specific positions on GE. District 36 Marilyn Lee District 40 Undecided District 41 Matt LoPresti District 42 Tough one, Nicole Ferguson is great on environmental policy overall and endorsed by the Sierra Club but I dont know about her positions on GMOs. I like Michael Golojuch but he opposes state GMO labeling. Would need to know Nicoles positions on GE. Definitely not Sharon Har! District 43 Dont know enough about Stacelynns GE platform but compared to Awana, I know at least Stacelynn can file her campaign finance disclosures on time and didnt introduce the Hawaii Monsanto Protection Act or vote against marriage equality like Karen did, so I pick Stacelynn! District 48 Robert Harris (Jarrett doesnt support state GMO labeling) District 50 Cynthia Thielen Maui County: Mayor Tamara Paltin hands down East Maui Nik Nikhilananda West Maui Elle Cochran South Maui John Fitzpatrick or Robin Sea Lily Knox, whoever you think can beat Don Couch the most. Makawao-Haiku-Paia undecided but leaning toward Molina who has Sierra Clubs endorsement Kauai County: Mayor Dustin Barca! Kauai County Council (some are choosing to only pick the top 5 as a strategy to concentrate votes for the people we really need to make sure have enough votes versus people who many feel will automatically be re-elected such as Furfaro and Yukimura) Gary Hooser Tim Bynum Mason Chock Felecia Cowden Tiana Laranio Jay Furfaro JoAnn Yukimura (I know some of you may disagree with this last one but if I had to pick all seven seats today this is probably my 7th) Hawaii County Council: District 2 Kerri Marks hands down! District 4 Roy Lozano District 5 Tiffany Edwards Hunt or Frannie Pueo District 6 Richard Abbett seems to be the peoples choice District 9 Margaret Wille hands down! Honolulu City Council District 2 undecided District 4 undecided District 6 Joli Tokusato District 8 undecided Congress District 1 I guess Takai, Chang or Xian. Xians platform is definitely the best but she isnt very close in the polls. At least Stanley has committed to take no chemical+GE funding and I think to go back on his GMO labeling platform now would be career ending so I trust he is committed to those two things at the federal level. Takai seems to be taking the lead against Donna Kim right now so worthy of consideration. Im torn, because Donna Kim is my nightmare in Congress but on the other hand its my dream to have her out of the Senate Presidency and the only way she will leave is if she wins. Congress District 2 Tulsi Gabbard (no primary race) US Senator Brian Schatz hands down Governor If I have to pick between Abercrombie and Ige, I suppose I pick Ige because his position on pesticide regulation seems stronger and pretty much everything Abercrombie does skeezes me out. Lt. Governor Undecided. Shan looks pretty good. Miles Shiratori has a great environmental platform. I hear good about Puletasi but I havent done my due diligence yet. Senator Hee of course I would usually say yes because traditionally he has been great on environmental issues but I still cant get a straight answer on why he co-introduced the Hawaii Monsanto Protection Act SB3058 to pre-empt the counties, it would have thrown out Bill 2491 and Bill 113 and county protections against GE and pesticides. Everyone makes mistakes I just strongly prefer support for home rule.
