via Tim Wise: The killing of the two officers in NYC is a terrible, horrible crime. AND, heres the thing: If you treat communities like you are an occupying army dont be surprised when folks assume you have declared war on them. And then dont be shocked when some decide to declare war back. Doesnt make it right, but its damned sure predictable. So long as the NYPD continues to excuse every act of violence done by their members, and so long as they act as though they are above criticism, the war will likely continue, which is tragic for everyone on all sides of it. But unlike the cops, who cant and wont express real remorse for anyone they kill, we who protest them do express remorse for those officers who are killed. Thats the difference between us, and it matters.
