Why should you worry about these little creatures who were stuffed in suitcases and were being flown out of the country? They are necessary for the eco-system. This is the first time a turtle smuggler has been caught and is currently being prosecuted for the illegal trade of fresh-water turtles, the chances are that the smuggler will be imprisoned for a year. But is that sentence lengthy enough for this criminal act? There is legislation that protects the indigenous wildlife of Sindh but the sentence is usually a year or two in prison. More often then enough, these cases are treated quite lightly by the judiciary and the accused are fined and they walk. Free as a bird (unlike the many they have captured, and smuggled) to do as they please. The legislation needs to be revised, there should be harsher punishments. But since protection of our environment is pushed into the shadows, these acts are never revised because they arent deemed necessary. In order for this country to function a bit better, shouldnt all these issues be taken into consideration? Forgetting the politics, if the flora fauna arent protected or acceptable measures arent put into play there will be bigger problems for the government and its people to deal with it. The next hearing is on October 22, 8:30 AM at the Malir Court in Karachi, support and help protect these turtles. Representatives from the Sindh Wildlife Department, the WWF and PAWS will be there in attendance for the hearing. #SaveTheTurtles
