well, a couple years ago we learned a valuable lesson. if you put your precious young seedlings outdoors...protect them from the Missouri weather. in 2012 our entire 2011 seedling harvest was demolished in a storm. hundreds of seedlings lost, with only three struggling survivors. this year, we babied our 2013 harvest by starting them indoors and moving them out when they were strong enough to handle the heat. we built seedling huts to protect them from the harsh rains that would flood all the soil out of the cups. they look like mini greenhouses, but really they are not used for warming. being made out of pallets, there is plenty of airflow to keep our babies cool, while they are protected from taking a beating from rain. but even though these huts where built out of extra heavy weight pallets and probably weigh around 100 pounds by the time you add all the legs and hardware...they were no match for last nights 60mph winds. so again, utter devastation and hours of hard work was just thrown all about the yard and field. estimated loss is about 150-200 tiger lilies. the day lily seedlings seem to be beaten up, but okay. we will assess the damage to the tender young root systems as time goes on.
