when i was nine years old, i got a nintendo 64 for christmas. it was exactly what i wanted, i was very happy and excited. it came with super mario 64. i heard a rumor on the playground that if you get all 120 stars, it opens a cannon in the courtyard. you can use it to launch yourself to the top of the castle, where yoshi is waiting to meet you. my nine year old self could not imagine something more amazing. three weeks ago i found my old n64 in a closet. i resolved to hook it up, start from scratch, and get every single one of those stars. it only took me 17 years, but tonight, i finally met yoshi. it was not as amazing as my nine year old self thought it would be. i mean, i had fun. there were some challenges, some frustrations. moments of exhaustion, relief, even triumph. but nothing really changed, i got 100 lives and nothing to do with them, its all done. i guess it really is true, the destination is moot, the journey is where its at.
