with permission from Raj Swaroop: Why Modi? Your simple question - TopicsExpress

with permission from Raj Swaroop: Why Modi? Your simple question is actually a million dollar question because this election is all about him. The theme is Modi. The rest are mere details. This is not to say NaMo is made of gold. He has his faults. Several. Todays sidelining of Jaswant Singh was sad. Right or wrong, it will be attributed to Modi. To answer you, I will try and do a laundry list of reasons 1. Despite detractors trying to puncture the Gujarat story, common knowledge suggests otherwise. Modi, no doubt talks big. But why not? When a sad joke like RaGa and a spoiler like Kejri talk big why not a performer like NM? Reason 1: Governance record 2. India in 2004 was at a cusp of something bigger. There was a buzz and optimism. That has been buried by UPA 1&2. Today this man (for all his real and perceived faults) means hope to people. He speaks the common mans language, one of equitable opportunities. Reason 2: Aspiration ( please its not energy of India, idea of India or any such bunk but simply Maslow) 3. Twitter turned 8 today. Time flies. The greatest positive effect of SM has been to knock heroes off their pedestals - in all fields. Today websites like unreal times poke fun of even SoniaG. As a consequence people dont tolerate nonsense. Even less high handedness and preachy stuff. Gandhi-Nehru drama does not wash today. Reason 3: The chaiwalla is seen as being more accessible than the prince. 4. Chaiwalla again represents hard work, integrity and fighting the odds. This finds resonance with todays voters who have Wikipedia on their fingertips. Reason 4: Personal example 5. Hype, slick PR work is acceptable today in a hyper- competitive world. Outright lying and motivated slander are not so. Hence some of Modis claims even if punctured are not held against him. As long as he is seen to deliver and eager for responsibility. We like aggressive and motivated people as colleagues. Why not as leaders? Reason 5: Practical considerations 6. For each Reddy bros, there are tens of corrupt congies. You say that TINA factor helps Modi. Not just you, many say this almost accusingly - as though Modi is somehow responsible for his poor opposition. His opposition is allowed to beat him, fairly and not by EVM fraud. Good luck. Reason 6: His opponents 7. Last but not the least - Barkha, Rajdeep & Saggi, Karan, Srini Jain, Siddharth V, Vir Sanghvi, Vinod Mehta, Private Citizen Katju, Shabana, Teesta, Arundhati and several others. Congi stool pigeons in media, academia and elsewhere have been carrying out a motivated campaign for 13/14 years running. As their lies and trickery stand mercilessly exposed by social media one by one their faces get blackened. Certain media ladies were boating on the Ganga last week trying to play the communal card to death. People ticked them off like nobodys business. Reason 7: Modis friends and biggest poll agents - the so-called mainstream media. This is not to say Modi as PM is foregone conclusion. Congies dont just roll over and die. They will fight hard. They may do something drastic and violent through their proxy AAP who have Naxal sympathizers in their ranks. Yet it is fair to say that he has shaken it all up like no other. An average plodder like me can give so many reasons. Sharper minds could give many more, in greater depth. All these could be debated and even dismissed. In that event I have a biggest reason, which many if not most would agree. A simpler answer to your simple question - Its my choice May the best person win.
