We are pleased to inform you that the #wordfeastchallenge ends this week with a Christmas Special. Further information will be given subsequently. Please, do not forget to include a reason for your votes in the comments. Thanks again. Todays theme is HIGH SCHOOL STORY 1: PARTING SHOTS “Ahn! We go hungry o!” Yet another Friday night in this single-gender secondary school. The lights in the refectory had gone out fifteen minutes into supper, a huge clattering of plates followed, and by the time we had the lights back on, half content of our pot of rice and beans was gone. Even the stew pot had been dispossessed of almost all its fish. We didn’t complain much though. After all, it was our last night in school before the commencement of the Christmas vacation. For the next three or so weeks, there would be freedom from those dream-interrupting bells, freedom from those hours of night prep where our seniors changed the shapes of our heads with knocks, freedom from the fear of Saturday inspection, freedom from “V-portions” of elephant grass.....and of course, freedom from Godwin’s snitching. As a matter of fact, there were days when we hoped Godwin would no longer resume school with us. We hated how his questions kept teachers in class for longer periods, we hated how he alerted teachers whenever we tried to collaborate during exams, and we hated how he reported to the Housemasters whenever some of us jumped across the school fence to get provisions. I wanted to teach him a lesson that night, but I had belongings to pack. “My eye o! My eye o! Who do me na? I will report!” We didn’t know who had pulled the prank on Godwin, but Schaudenfreude was the collective feeling, and we laughed our hearts out as tears mingled with nasal mucus on his face. We knew what had happened. He had been on the receiving end of “Red Night”. Someone had apparently sneaked up to him in his sleep, fixed powder in his hair, and applied toothpaste to his eyes. STORY 2: FANTASY The Physics teacher is saying something about convergent rays. My mind keeps churning, it cannot keep still. Oyinye, My heart and soul are convergent upon you. They collide and form a sharp edge, like cupid’s arrow. I will fire them into your heart, love. Straight into your heart… ‘Kingsley!’ I hear my name from a distance. I choose not to answer, for my eyes are beholding the wonders of creation; the beauty that is Onyinye. Onyinye, even your name melts on the tongue. Like butter…like ice… ‘Kingsley!!!’ This time the voices are many, like the combined chants of 300 warriors. I smile at the thought of warriors, fighting tooth and nail for a prize, a cause… like Onyinye. Onyinye, I’ll do anything for you. I’ll cross the ocean for you. I’ll go and bring you the moon… ‘Kingsleyyyyy!!!!’ I’m suddenly jolted by the landing of a cane on my back. Several pairs of eyes stare at me like I were some alien. Mr Umoru looks like he’s going to tear me in half. ‘Si…sir?’ I manage to say. Silence. He hasn’t recovered from his rage. I decide to give him time. Onyinye, your skin-deep beauty makes… ‘Kingsleyyyyyyyy!!!!’ I jump out of my seat in fear. Mr Umoru’s hands are swift, as he releases biting lashes on my back. Fiam! Fiam!.. I scream. The class bursts out laughing, Onyinye too is laughing. My heart breaks. ‘You. Fool. I’ve. Been. Asking. You. A. question. For. The. Past. Five. Minutes.’ Mr Umoru says as he flogs my back with his cane, each swipe embodying each word. ‘Sir! Sir?’ I’m trying hard to hold back my tears. He finally stops, looks me in the eye and says: ‘What is a convergent ray?’ I do not know when it falls out of my mouth: ONYINYE!
