wouldnt be a big race without a top 10 summarizing the day. .or at least 5 hours and 32 minutes of it. 10. #ultrabackwoods—First race I’ve run where the starting line is “on top of that snow heap over there” and instead of a gun you get a dude with a mic “on your marks, get set, GOOOOOOOOOO!” (and the crowd goes wild!!! . .just kidding. .there was no crowd) 9. #ultrafickle—Amazing how your view of pace changes throughout a race. You go from nervous that your first 5 were 8 min and under, to worried that your pace has crept up to the 9 minute mark by the halfway point, to euphoric that you might be able to crawl up that hill in just under 15 minutes to the finish line. 8. #ultrashitty—Literally. You know what’s between Kalamazoo and South Haven? Farms. And Fields. And chicken coops. Luckily I was downwind from a running partner drenched in Axe. Which smells marginally better than farms, fields, and chicken coops. 7. #ultrajagoffs—Not sure at this point who is a bigger tool. . .The spectator sipping coffee telling us the “course isn’t nearly as tough this year as it was last year” or the waiter at Beer Exchange post-race who made me put my Powerade away because it wasn’t purchased there. I think it’s a tie. 6. #ultrafusion—Zach and I were mixin’ some mad beats the entire race (except miles 27-30. . the “dark miles”). A little Mr. Bigg featuring Snoop? Or Korn featuring Luke Bryan? Those dreadlock sporting hippy runners had a cultural experience they won’t soon forget. 5. #ultralingual—Turns out the more fatigued Zach gets, the more he speaks Spanish. The more fatigued I get, the more I speak innuendo and “that’s what she said”. 4. #ultraclassic—I haven’t had fully loaded Coca-Cola Classic since in about 20 years, and nothing could’ve possibly tasted better at miles 20, 25, and 30. Little Dixie cups full of happiness. 3. #ultrachoiceful—Amazing how we both chose to run with legit rocks in our shoes for countless miles. .because the thought of bending over to remove said shoes and dump the rocks out sounded infinitely more painful. 2. #ultravocalchords—Lucky for me and unlucky for anyone within ear shot. .this girl never gets out of breath and will belt out country ballads just as loud at mile 32 as I do at mile 2. 1. #ultrabadasses—To quote Zach Wyer “we may be badass runners, but we’re not crazy”. Neither of us caught the ultrabug. Consider that box checked. . .maybe
