Though the best potentially achievable solution, which excludes genocide of mankind, or the total extinction of humans, is the Chinese 1 child per couple law. It would start halving population as the next generation dies out. (And yes, there will be exceptions having more kids, but there are also people having no kids) That would decrease demand considerably, allowing the forests to replenish.
