youtu.be/czu4x6caZRE Alcatraz, known as the Rock, is arguably America’s most famous, and infamous, prison. Some of the Rock’s most famous “guests” include Alvin Karpis, Machine Gun Kelly, and Al Capone. One frightening area of the prison is called “the hole.” Prisoners sent to the hole were isolated and alone, sometimes for weeks at a time. In the 1940s, an inmate was locked in the hole. Immediately after the door slammed shut, the inmate began screaming in the darkness. He shouted that some kind of monster was in there with him, but no one listened. Eventually, there was silence. When the guards finally opened the door again, the inmate was found dead, his face twisted in frozen horror. Another prison with a harsh history is the old Ohio State Reformatory. The facility was made famous by the movie, “The Shawshank Redemption,” but there’s more to the story than that. The prison features a massive cellblock with nearly 600 cells stacked six tiers high, more than enough room for a few ghost stories. A number of spirits are said to haunt the prison, including several inmates who took their own lives. One cut his own throat with a straight razor. Another doused himself with lighter fluid and set himself ablaze. Other deaths were more mysterious, like the prisoner whose head was somehow crushed in his cell door.
