youtu.be/nmO0OZC6Ifk The story behind this iconic song, as told to Mick Wall in his amazing biography of Led Zeppelin, (pg. 14-15) by Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, John Entwhistle and Keith Moon, is that in May 1966, Keith and John were very upset with Roger Daltrys physical fighting with Keith and Pete Townshends dark and black moods and had decided to leave The WHO. Jimmy was looking to put together a powerful band that could propel his ideas that he had following Jeffs leaving the YARDBIRDS. Jimmy, Jeff, Keith (John Entwhistle backed out at the last minute, replaced by Jimmys friend, John Paul Johns), and the great Keyboard session man, Nicky Hopkins, went into Londons IBC studios in May 1966 to record this song. The idea was that this would be the original Led Zeppelin, with Steve Marriott on Lead vocals and guitar. Don Arden told Page that he would break Pages fingers if he tried to nick Marriott. The Zeppelin idea was dropped. Jimmy came up with the Bolero rhythm on 12-String guitar and was the producer with Mickie Most for this session. Jeff came up with the melody line and the tempo/dynamic/harmonic change right after Moon does his drum insanity. If you turn up the track loud, you can hear Keith scream. He had hit his foot and almost broke his ankle at that moment. Happy Birthday Bobby Grahm! As I mentioned previously on another post, I play this song still. Yeah, I sat down and learned all of it. It is a lot of fun to play. Sadly, no one knows this song when I perform it. It is way, way past many of the folks lifetimes. Im simply an older cat.
