In its most simplistic terminology functional movement can be seen as the everyday movement demands that your body faces. These demands are unique to you as an individual e.g. my 63 year old mum wouldnt encounter the same challenges on her body as an elite athlete does and vice versa - scalability and personalisation are therefore key in any training plan. Basic functional (also termed primal) movement patterns are things we learn from birth - push, pull, squat, bend, extend, single leg balance, rotate…. If you want improved quality of movement then you need to go back to basics and relearn these patterns first. Train movement not individual muscles and revisit the purity of movement you had as a baby before the stresses of work and life caused your body to compensate and distort.
