youtube/watch?v=H3X_KyqGf3w MOVIE CLIP OF THE DAY - United 93 (2006) Paul Greengrass United 93 was perhaps the most uncomfortable movie going experience of my life. Not because the film is so brutally realistic (and harrowingly acted) but because the screening I attended was during my deployment to Iraq. The theater was a dark, right outside there was a constant reminder of being at work and not at home. The dark room was full of hundreds of soldiers and you couldnt hear a pin drop. It remains (to this day) one of the most unique movie going experiences of my life. Once the house lights went up, everyone exited with a sense of solemnity. The collective mood of the room then fell to a dead silence. Not the kind normally associated with a tear jerker like The Notebook but an altogether different variety (of quiet anger). Of course, one must appreciate the context of the situation. The feeling was so palpable it almost made us feel (in that relatively enclosed space) a big part of that fateful day. And yet, as more and more years go by after losing a family member, a loved one or a spouse (whether in war or at home) we are reminded of the true power of cinema. Its ability to transport us to a unique world, if only for a few hours. To change our perspective, to alter our consciousness in order to open our minds eye to new horizons. The brave people on United 93 might not have lived to see the film version of their lives, but their bravery and actions in an insanely changing world, is a testament to the indomitable will of the human spirit. Nationalities, ideology and religion aside; few expressions of art could be as brave and powerful as what Greengrass has achieved. With the magic of editing, acting, camera work and set design; he has done the impeccable and the impossible. This is what it means to be a true artist. To tread where others fear to tread. Yes I am a veteran but I am but one singular person in an endless sea of souls (all with their own unique struggles). Let us remember those among us who have sacrificed (in any form) during our lives and above all things; let us love those who are in our lives now who make us better each and every day.
