This episode, written by legendary science fiction writer Richard Matheson, was an interesting exploration into the darker, violent side of the human equation, itself. More importantly, it gives audiences an idea as to what type of leader Captain James T. Kirk is. What makes him the way he is. Inspired by Robert Louis Stevensons psychological horror classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this 23rd Century version of that classic is one of the best episodes written. What type of chaos and utter destruction would be unleashed? How much collateral damage would be inflicted? How many lives would suffer, let alone be killed by such utter brutality, great ferocity, and great savagery? Who would be on the receiving end of such a savage power?
