Éva Andor R.I.P. Éva Andor, a dear friend of many in Ireland, and one of Hungary’s leading sopranos, commenced her career as a schoolgirl member of the renowned ‘Kodály Choir’. She graduated from the Liszt Academy of Music in 1964 with honours in singing and teaching and was engaged at once as a member of the Hungarian State Opera, Budapest. Three years later, at the recommendation of Zoltán Kodály, she received a scholarship to attend Dartmouth College in the USA where she studied with Hans Heinz of the Juilliard School. During her stay she made her New York début at the Lincoln Center. Since then she earned a worldwide reputation in performances of countless operas, oratorios, and Lieder, ranging from Purcell and Pergolesi to Honegger and Kodály. Éva has worked with numerous illustrious conductors such as Abbado, Beluggi, Corboz, Ferencsik, M. Horváth, Gönnenwein, Gardelli, Matacic and Szenkar. She has performed extensively all over the world. Her recordings have been distinguished with three Grand Prix de Disques: • Liszt: Christus, Saint Elisabeth • Kodály: Te Deum, Songs Opus 1 • Mahler: Des Knaben Wunderhorn In 1968 she won the Franz Liszt Prize. In 1976 she was conferred with the title ‘Merited Artist of the Hungarian People’s Republic’. Since 1981 she has been professor of classical singing at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music where from 1999 to 2007 she was Head of the Department of Classical Singing. Éva’s vocal master classes have been a feature of many Kodály Society of Ireland summer courses since 1995. Many singing teachers and their young professional students attended her master classes at our summer courses for about 10 years and later in the Irish Vocal Master Classes courses. She had a great deal of experience to impart to young professional singers. Éva will be in our thoughts during our course starting on the 7th July. We will mark her contribution to singing culture in Ireland in an artistic way. After almost a year in hospital, Éva passed away on the 16th May 2014. May she rest in peace.
