Þjóðminjasafni, 26. mars 2014. There is a good reason to welcome you and thank you, Birgitta Wallace, for your long an important research of the archeological history of the Wineland expeditions, the great event in the geographical history when America was discovered by the white man 1000 years ago. But of course we are also interested in the future of this research. In this connection I want to mention the doctoral thesis by Ólafur Halldórsson in 1978. There he concludes that the Erik the Red´s saga and the saga of the Greenlanders are probably both from approximately the same time, possibly written in the first decades of he 13th century. Halldórsson furthermore concludes that the author of Erik´s saga probably did not know the Greenlanders saga, and the author of the Greenlanders saga would neither have known the Erik´s saga. This is a certain indication that both these sagas should be considered as possibly equal historic sources of the expeditions to the New World. Unfortunately Halldórsson´s doctoral thesis is not available in English, while an article by dr. Jón Jóhannesson from 1956 was soon translated into English and is therefore far better known. In Jóhannesson´s article he concluded that the saga of Erik is probably a late and unreliable one, while he considered the Greenlanders´ saga to be a far better and more original narrative. I may also refer to my discussion concerning this matter in my book The Wineland Millennium. And my question to you is: Which are your ideas of the research of archeological remains of the Wineland expeditions, in the future?
