From Davids desk: Functional Twist: The new 2014 Cheetah and Lion have an improved and refined leech twist that I call “Functional Twist”. Finding the correct leech twist has been (and still is) the holy grail for sail designers. Simply stated, leech twist is the change in angle of the foil, relative to the boom as you move up the sail. Aerodynamic theory tells us that the most functional twist is progressive, starting with no twist at the clew and the maximum twist in the head. This is because the angle of the apparent wind increases as you go higher up the sail. In order to keep the airflow attached the sail must twist more in the head to avoid stall. Having the correct twist produces a sail that is the most efficient in all wind conditions and sailing angles. Functional twist is achieved by having a smooth leech outline, with no cut-ins or jags and at the same time the correct profile and tension along the leech. Functional twist makes the Cheetah and Lion quick to pump, powerful and balanced.
