JAZZ ON FILM Το 1951 η μουσική του Alex North για την ταινία του Elia Kazan , Λεωφορείο ο Πόθος άνοιξε τον δρόμο για μία γενιά μουσικών να γράψουν τζαζ σάουντρακς όπως ο Elmer Bernstein , ο Duke Ellington , o Bern...ard Herrmann , o Quincy Jones , o Henry Mancini ή ο Lalo Schifrin. Η εποχή συνέπαισε και με την άνθιση φίλμς εκτός των στούντιο του Hollywood , ταινιών που ανέδειξαν ανεξάρτητους δημιουργούς , καλλιτεχνικά και εμπορικά , όπως ο John Cassavetes (Shadows. 1959 και Too Late Blues ,1961) , Shirley Clarke (The Connection , 1962 , και Cool World ,1964) , Robert Frank και Alfred Leslie (Pull My Daisy , 1959) και Herbet Danska (Sweet Love , Bitter ,1968) .Οι σκηνοθέτες αυτοί πειραματίστικαν όχι μόνο με δραματικά θέματα και διαφορετικά στυλ αλλά εισήγαγαν στον κινηματογράφο και τις αυτοσχεδιαστικές νέες φόρμες της μοντέρνας τζαζ , όπως το hard bop , την modal jazz , την free jazz ή το afro cuban .Η συνθήκη αυτή ξεπέρασε τα Αμερικανικά σύνορα καθώς και Ευρωπαίοι και Ιάπωνες δημιουργοί των δεκαετίων του 50 και του 60 , όπως ο Bernardo Bertolucci , o Jean - Luc Godard , o Jorgen Leth , o Joseph Losey , o Louis Malle , o Mikkio Naruse , o Roman Polanski , o Jerzy Skolimowski και ο Roger Vadim , υποδέχτηκαν στις ταινίες τους δημιουργικούς μουσικούς της τζαζ όπως ο Gato Barbieri , Miles Davis , Dizzy Gillespie , Krysztof Komeda , John Lewis με το Modern Jazz Quartet , Thelonious Monk , Bud Powell , Toru Takemitsu και άλλους για να γράψουν jazz soundtracks ενισχύοντας την πρωτοπορία του έργου τους .
