Dear Dr Gilead - Many thanks for your email. We watch the situation in Gaza with horror. The official OCHA report of July 26 notes that: Of 924 confirmed Gaza civilian casualties, 206 are children and 109 are women. 5500 people in Gaza have so far been confirmed injured—30% children and 20% women. 18 health facilities have been targeted and damaged. Irrespective of ones political views, which for health professionals are surely irrelevant in the face of such high numbers of casualties, the catastrophic human effects of Operation Protective Edge are clear for the world to see. As the UN Secretary-General has implored, this killing must stop, and stop now. We will be publishing letters expressing varying viewpoints over the coming weeks. Currently, 15 711 people have signed the letter you refer to. We take that figure as a signal of serious concern about the present terrifying situation in Gaza for civilians and health professionals alike. My best, Richard From: Leon Gilead [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 27 July 2014 09:50 To: Ombudsman (ELS); Horton, Richard (ELS-CAM) Subject: The Lancet, Early Online Publication, 23 July 2014 doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(14)61044-8Cite or Link Using DOI Copyright (c) 2014 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved. An open letter for the people in Gaza The Lancet, Early Online Publication, 23 July 2014 doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(14)61044-8Cite or Link Using DOI Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved. An open letter for the people in Gaza This letter published in the Lancet is an indictment of Israel as a vicious murderer of innocent civilians, women and children. Their fate is really horrible and Israel as a state, nation and culture as well as most individuals comprising i...t are appalled at the humanitarian situation in Gaza. This is exactly the reason why Israel, unlike most of the ruthless regimens in the middle east and elsewhere, is making every effort to prevent unnecessary casualties even at the expense of having our fellow countrymen, our own children & soldiers lives endangered and lost. While the Palestinian society glorifies death, teaches its children from kindergarten on and encourages them to become martyrs while slaughtering innocent Israeli civilians, Israel glorifies peace, life and freedom. The fact that in the face of a relentless enemy that is looking for only one result - the destruction of Israel, and will not agree for anything but that, Israel has but one option - to fight for its own existence - has eluded the eyes of the biased writers of this letter. The authors of the Lancet who chose to allow the publishment of such a biased letter casts a shadow on all scientific, supposedly balanced and well researched publications the Lancet presumes to publish. Did you send this letter for pear review to a balanced group of editors? did you check its factual base? Will you allow a baseless science fiction paper presuming to be truthful to be published in your site? We all know the answer, when it comes to science, but in politics you allow this one sided, fact distorting, truth neglecting letter to be published. This decision makes the Lancet as despicable as the Nazi anti-Semitic news paper Der Stürmer. Therefore, let it be known from now on that the Lancet has changed its name to Der Stürmer. I hope most of your readers, who are scientists and think the truth is important, will cancel their subscription to your Journal. I hope many will follow. You dont deserve our attention. -- Dr. Leon Gilead Senior Dermatologist, Head of the Dermatosurgery and MOHS clinic Department of Dermatology Hadassah University Medical Center P.O.Box 12000 Jerusalem 91120 Israel 972-50-7874309 972-2-6429259 Elsevier Limited.
