משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם Year after year, one of the things that strikes me about living here in Israel is the rain season and its timing. Growing up as a religious Jew in England, I didnt get why we prayed for rain during a specific period of the year. Doesnt it rain the whole year round? I would think to myself. Only when I moved to Israel did I understand how our prayers and the land here are deeply linked. Each year with almost clockwork punctuality, the first rains happen on or around Sukkot, just as we start to pray for rain for the land. After years of being a religious Jew in England, it was only when I rejoined my family in Israel that I really felt and understood (some of) the meaning of the prayers I had been saying for years. As the heavens truly opened up for the first time this year moments ago, friends secular, religious, left wing and right wing all shared their joy at witnessing the downpour. Theres something special about seeing people of all different beliefs putting their differences aside and simply rejoicing in nature.
