السلام عليكم ورحمةالله و بركاته My dear brothers while a man is not obligated to consult subsequent marriages with his wife nor be deterred by her emotions, a great amount of emphasis is placed upon equality and justice between wives. Allah subhanahu ta ala says in verse 3 in Suratun Nisaa something to the effect: and if you fear that you will not be just to your wives, marry only one or what your right hand possess this is better for you. What is justice between wives? What is equality? That is: Not favouring one above the other in gifts and in time. Each wife has a right over you, the second does not have more rights than the first nor the elder over the younger. Each wife are equally wives in the eyes of Allah. Her rights range from Mahr to Clothes to cover her body. Adequate clothing for winter and summer. A home to shelter and maintain her privacy and food to nourish her body. Whatever he gives one wife he should give the other. What he gives his children is not part of what he gives his wives, that should be made clear to all parties involved. Most importantly he should afford each wife equal time. Her time starts from Maghrib sunset to Fajr sunrise. A wife does not have charge over his daytime, a man needs to work and spend time with his children as well as his other wives. Nabi ( saw ) visited all his wives everyday after Asr and at times congregated and chatted to all of them at once. Baring all these rights that a woman has over a man in mind, if he can not fulfil these rights and deal justly between them, HE SHOULD MARRY ONLY ONE that is better for him because the punishment for injustice in the Akhirah is very severe. According to Hadeeth he will be raised with half of his body paralysed. He will not be able to cross the Pool Siraat and will fall headlong in to Jahannam. My dear brothers your injustice is digging a hole in Jahannam for you. Your beautiful wife whom you favour above the others becomes a curse on you, someone youll wish you have never known. As long as there is life in your body you still have a chance to right your wrongs. If you have two wives and one is a secret or one has to forgo her rights because the other claims more than what is due to her YOU will be answerable for that and YOU will be punished for that. Sort out your affairs today because tomorrow may never come. May Allah grant us all Hidayah aameen ya rabbal aalameen.
