It’s a trip around the sun that can seem like an eternity when we’re counting down the days, but always feels like a blur in retrospect. A lot can change over the course of a year, some predictable and some not so much. Every year our environment changes around us. The temperature changes with the seasons, water falls from the sky (frozen or otherwise), plants sprout, bloom, and wilt, the days get longer and shorter, and all around the world our landscape makes some amazing transformations. Some of these transformations are all natural but many are man made as well. New buildings are erected, and others torn down. New businesses open up and others close up shop. New technology replaces the old. On a more personal level, we as people change. On the surface, our looks change with new trends, with the weather, and, inevitably, with the wear and tear of a year’s worth of new experiences. We change our clothes, we get hair cuts, and we grow up. On the inside, a lot can change in our minds and in our hearts. The passing of a year doesn’t only make us one year older, but one year wiser as well. We learn new things every day. We become more informed about some aspects of our world, and lose track of others. New revelations, big and small, change our opinions, how we act, and sometimes our very outlook on life. Seemingly small decisions can change our lives forever by giving us opportunities to make new friends, change career paths, and maybe even fall in love. Those same decisions, however, can cause friends to drift apart, and love to falter. But whatever happens throughout the year, we should try to make the best of what comes our way, because no matter how much we might want to make time stand still, or speed things along, the year will keep steadily marching forward, unwilling to be swayed by the will of mere mortals.
