Lord Ganesh / Ganesha / Vignaraja / Vinayaka…God of knowledge and the remover of obstacles... An elephant deity riding a mouse is one of the best known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. Ganesha, also called Ganapati, is the god of wisdom, prudence, and salvation. Ga means Knowledge, na means Salvation, and isha and pati mean Lord. The universe is a group of atoms and different energies. The Lord of all these groups of atoms and energies is Ganesha. Ajam Nirvikalpam Niraakaaramekam. Ganesha is Ajam (unborn), he is Nirvikalpam (attributeless), he is Niraakaar (formless) and he symbolizes the consciousness which is omnipresent. He is the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. He is also worshipped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth. In fact, Ganesha is one of the five prime Hindu deities (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga being the other four) whose idolatry is glorified as the panchayatana pooja. Ganeshas head symbolizes the Atman or the soul, which is the ultimate supreme reality of human existence, and his human body signifies Maya or the earthly existence of human beings. The elephant head denotes wisdom and its trunk represents Om, the sound symbol of cosmic reality. Once goddess Parvathi, while bathing, created a boy out of the dirt of her body and assigned him the task of guarding the entrance to her bathroom. When Shiva, her husband returned, he was surprised to find a stranger denying him access, and struck off the boys head in rage. Parvati broke down in utter grief and to soothe her, Shiva sent out his squad (gana) to fetch the head of any sleeping being who was facing the north. The company found a sleeping elephant and brought back its severed head, which was then attached to the body of the boy. Shiva restored its life and made him the leader (pati) of his troops. Hence his name Ganapati. Shiva also bestowed a boon that people would worship him and invoke his name before undertaking any venture. Lord Ganesha is the personification of Buddhi Himself. The other two virtues are personified as Goddesses and considered to be the consorts of Lord Ganesha. Most of the art works show Ganesha flanked by two consorts who are named as Riddhi and Siddhi. It is believed that Riddhi and Siddhi were daughters of Lord Brahma who himself conducted wedding ceremony of Lord Ganesha. As per Shiva Purana, Lord Ganesha had two sons who were named as Shubh and Laabh. Shubh and Laabh are personification of auspiciousness and profit respectively. Shubh was the son of Goddess Riddhi and Laabh was the son of Goddess Siddhi. ***** Ganesha Iconography - Lord Ganesha is represented with human body having elephant head. Usually He is depicted with four hands and carries a noose and a goad in upper hands. One of the lower hands of Lord Ganesha is shown in Abhaya Mudra while in the other lower hand he holds a bowl full of Modakas. The mount of Lord Ganesha is a mouse. Ganesha is also the destroyer of vanity, selfishness and pride. He is the personification of material universe in all its various magnificent manifestations. The birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha is celebrated as Ganesha Chaturthi. People…May Lord Ganesha protect you and your family & Bless you with Peace and Joy ! Shubh / Happy Ganesha Chaturthi / Gowri Ganesha Habbada Haardhika Shubhashayagalu ! Thank you… II ॐ महागणाधिपतये नमः ॥
