Narendra Modi hit the diplomatic equivalent of a home run starting out his tenure with the unexpected —by inviting all Saarc leaders to his swearing in ceremony. While the focus will inevitably be on Pakistan and Nawaz Sharif, the importance of other neighbours to Indias security, economic and strategic interests has actually increased in comparison to Pakistan. But lets stay with Pakistan for .. The invitation caught the domestic doomsday drummers equally off-guard. With one stroke Modi silenced an entire swathe of political commentariat in India who believe he would come down hard on Muslims in India and Pakistan. This is also the group that sets India-Pak ties as the barometer for approach to Indian Muslims. Therefore, not just Mehbooba Mufti, even NDA-phobic Omar Abdullah was gushing on social media. Equally, the move has quietened the loonies on the right, who are the oppos .. The foreign office played safe citing Sharif s domestic commitments. It took an unnamed but politically savvy senior functionary to indicate that Sharif might actually make it, for his first one to one chat with Modi, that too on the day he takes office. The conversation may not yield much but it will give Modi a first hand assessment of Sharif. Sharif is not in a comfortable place. His regular run-ins with the army on the TTP and Pervez Musharraf may have shrunk his wiggle room on policy. It might explain his delays on implementing the NDMA to India, which has apparently been put on hold by the ary. India doesnt have to hold its breath for this. However, there is a very good case for tossing the composite dialogue out the window. The dialogue has passed its sell-by date, and lost its usefulness as a stick to beat them ..
