বর্ধমানে হট্টমেলা........................ Bedlam in Burdwan The ramifications of the bedlam in the backwaters of Bengal’s Burdwan district are baffling in the extreme. There are several facets that have served to place the Trinamul Congress government on a sticky wicket. Khagragarh is a place that is barely noticeable on the state map; and yet the building that housed the bomb-manufacturing unit is owned by a district Trinamul activist. Second, as revealed by this newspaper, a terrorist training centre was coming up in its vicinity and refresher courses on terror were being conducted by the madrasas through a fundamentalist curriculum……………Conflicting signals from rulers tie the hands of administrators. Thus the failure of intelligence, indeed a tendency of policemen to turn a blind eye to suspicious activities. Add to this the Trinamul connection of the house-owner, and this becomes a case best not investigated by the state’s police. In the event, the best, indeed the only viable course is for investigation to be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The standard cavil over Centre-state relations and federal rights will not wash. This is not a matter about the Chief Minister’s ego or her desire to escape embarrassment; at stake are lives of citizens. With the investigation at its threshold, the administration has been incredibly unprofessional in its handling of a vital issue ~ the seizure of arms, ammunition, and bomb-making material. Specifically, the bombs were detonated without consulting central experts. Hence the charge by security agencies in Delhi that the state government’s haste has served to destroy clues that are pivotal to the investigations. Hence also the barb of the widely-respected Mr Ved Marwah, former Director-General of NSG ~ “It’s a criminal offence and the police seniors who gave the order should be prosecuted for criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.” This indictment has been supplemented by the Intelligence Bureau’s caveat that had the bombs been defused and preserved, they would have revealed the explosives used. West Bengal would do well to make way for the NIA.
