In this edition, we focus on Bangladesh. By Ayush Srivastava 29-Aug-2013 8:23:00 AM Quick Facts COUNTRY NAME: Bangladesh GROUP : A (along with India, Pakistan and Nepal) ADMINISTRATIVE BODY: Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) FIFA RANKING: 158 NICKNAME: Bengal Tigers Last Official Match Played: Nepal 0-2 Bangladesh (4 th March 2013) History And Team Highlights The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) was formed in 1972, after the country won its independence in 1971. It got affiliated to the AFC and FIFA in 1973 and 1976 respectively, and played its first ever international game against Thailand on 26th July 1973, a game which ended in a 2-2 draw in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This was the venue for all of their first 13 games where they failed to win a single game and lost ten. The Bengal Tigers did not win their first game until the time they defeated Afghanistan 4-1 in 1979, in the Asian Cup qualifiers, a tournament through which they created history, by becoming only the second South Asian side after India, to appear in the Asian Cup, in its 1980 edition. At the Asian Cup, they failed to win a single game and conceded 17 goals in the process. Having never come close to qualifying for a World Cup, this was their best moment in International football, as they haven’t come close to repeating this feat ever since. They have made two appearances in the AFC Challenge Cup, with their best performance being in the inaugural edition, which they had hosted, where they managed to reach the quarter-finals. Apart from the SAFF Championships, where they have been consistent performers, their best results have been in the South Asian Games, where they won gold medals in 1999 and 2010. SAFF Championships As mentioned above, after India, the Bengal Tigers have probably been one of the more consistent sides in the competition. In eight appearances in the competition since making their debut, they have entered the knock- out stages on five occasions, and contested three finals on the trot from 1999 to 2005, winning at home in 2003, their only triumph in the competition, and losing the other two to India. The Blue Tigers have been the bogey team for the Bangladeshis, as the other two times when they reached the semis; it was India that sent them packing in the competition. 2011 though, was their worst ever showing in the competition, as the team lost two games in the group stages for the first ever time, ending up bottom of their group, with just one point to show for their efforts. 2013 SAFF Championship Preliminary Squad Goalkeepers- Mamun Khan, Shahidul Alam Sohel, Biplob Bhattacharjee. Defender-Nasiruddin Chowdhury, Waly Faisal, Md. Linkon, Raihan Hasan, Ariful Islam, Atikur Rahman Mishu. Midfeilders- Mamunul Islam, Jamal Bhuiyan, Omar Faruk Babu, Sohel Rana, Zahid Hossain, Mobarak Hossian Bhuiyan, Monaem Raju. Forwards- Zahid Hasan Emily, Shakahwat Hossian Rony, Toklis Ahmed Wahed Ahmed and Mithun Chowdhury. Players To Watch Out For Mohammed Ariful Islam – The central defender is only 25 years old, but is already the veteran in Bangladesh’s ranks. His experience and astute reading of the game will prove vital to the Bengal Tigers’ hopes of putting the 2011 SAFF fiasco behind them. With captain Mamunul Islam suffering from an injury and still a doubt, the pressure is bound to increase on the central defender, to guide his team through a tough group. Zahid Hossain – The midfielder has proven to be a vital member of the national side, ever since making his debut in 2006. With 5 goals in 27 games, Hossain also has the ability to pop up with a vital goal every now and then, which is what is expected from midfielders, if any nation is going to be successful on the International stage. Zahid Hasan Emily – Bangladesh’s go-to man upfront, the striker has scored 10 goals in 49 games for the national team. While not a great record for a player who is supposed to be the country’s main man in attack, Emily crucially has scored against all the three teams who are part of their group in the SAFF Championship, and has vast experience to draw upon, at a stage like this. With chances coming few and far in-between for Bangladesh, the forward will have to be at his ruthless best, if the national team are to stand a chance of making it past the group stages.
