ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਜਮਾਨੁ ॥ kartaa too mayraa jajmaan. Guruji here says Waheguru You alone are my Benefactor (Jajman), here he politely requested the Lord to bless him with His name. In order to understand these lines of the shabad, we must first understand a relationship between Pandit /Purohit and Jajman. “Purohit” in the Indian religious context means a family priest. The word is also used synonymously with the word pandit that also means a priest. In addition to performing religious ceremonies he also act an advisor to family on their day to day issues and are usually given donations and gifts in the nature of food ,clothes, money or gold known as “Dakshina”. The offeror of the donations is known as “Jajman” In the context of Purohit-Jajman relationship firstly it is important to be kept in mind that Purohit due to his religious knowledge and advisory holds much higher status to Jajman. He always remain fully aware of each & every aspect of life of a Jajman, whether it be his financial position, social status or other backgrounds. Secondly Jajman usually gives donations to Purohit, which is basically his obligation and a right of a Purohit. However Purohit –jajman relation as portrayed by Guruji is bit different, in this relation Jajman (Waheguru) holds a much higher position/status and is capable of giving anything to the Purohit (Devotee). This is not a right-obligation relation and in order get anything from Jajman, purohit will have to request (Leaving his ego behind) and will have to keep a high standard of living. Gifts and donations asked for are not just articles of basic necessities like food, clothing or money but name of the Lord. By name of Lord, Guruji only wanted us to inherit virtues/qualities that Waheguru possess. But Guruji also want us to understand Waheguru to his fullest, like a Purohit and do all those acts and things which makes our Jajman happy. What actually Guruji asks Waheguru to bless him with? How those articles to be used in daily life? (To be continued)………
