Punjab The name of the region is a compound of two Persian words and was introduced to the region by the Turkic Muslim conquerors of India and more formally popularized during the Mughal empire. Punjab literally means (The Land of) Five Rivers referring to the following rivers: the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas. The total Area of punjab is : 50362 square kilometers (Punjab occupies 1.54 % of the country’s total geographical area.) Location : Punjab is situated in the northwest of India, it is bordered by Pakistan on the west, the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Himachal Pradesh on its northeast and Haryana and Rajasthan to its south. Punjab has been the gateway of India in the Past, and as such, had a position of commanding significance in the history this sub-continent. It has been aptly called the sword-arm of India. It has also been the birthplace of one of the most dynamic-and the youngest of great religions of the world. Their share in defence forces is five times of their percentage in the total population of the country. The State is the largest contributor to the national pool of wheat and rice for the public distribution system. Major Land Features : Most of Punjab is a fertile plain; toward the southeast one finds semi-arid and desert landscape; a belt of undulating hills extends along the northeast at the foot of the Himalayas. Four rivers, the Ravi, Beas, Satluj and Ghaggar flow across the state in a southwesterly direction. They have numerous small and seasonal tributaries. In addition, Punjab is watered by an extensive canal system.
