సోషలిస్టు సూఫీ – జ్ఞాపకాలు సోషలిస్టు సూఫీ ఫైజ్ అహ్మద్ ఫైజ్ జీవితం - కవిత్వం అనే అవసరమైన మంచి పుస్తకం వెలువరించిన మిత్రుడు అబ్దుల్ వాహెద్ కు అభినందనలు, కృతజ్ఞతలు, శుభాకాంక్షలు. బహుశా ఫైజ్ మీద ఇది తొలి తెలుగు పుస్తకం కావచ్చు. ఈ భావస్ఫోరకమైన పుస్తకం ఎన్నెన్నో పురా జ్ఞాపకాలను తట్టిలేపింది. దాదాపు ముప్పై ఐదేళ్ల కింద మొదటిసారి అమరుడు సి వి సుబ్బారావు నోటి వెంట ఫైజ్ పేరు, ఫైజ్ కవిత్వం, ఫైజ్ గురించి ఎన్నెన్నో జానపద గాథలు విన్నాను. (ఒకవైపు ఫైజ్ ను అరెస్టు చేసి జైలులో పెట్టిన అయూబ్ ఖాన్ సైనిక ప్రభుత్వం ఒక సంగీత ప్రదర్శన ఏర్పాటు చేసి, నూర్జహాన్ ను పిలిచి, ప్రత్యేకంగా ఫైజ్ గీతాలు ఆలపించవద్దని, ప్రభుత్వాన్ని ఇబ్బందిలో పెట్టవద్దని విజ్ఞప్తి చేయగా, నూర్జహాన్ ఆ సంగతంతా వేదిక మీద చెప్పి, ఫైజ్ సుప్రసిద్ధ గీతం ముఝ్ సే పహలీ సీ మొహబ్బత్ పాడడం లాంటి గాథలెన్నో...) అప్పటి నుంచి ఇప్పటివరకూ ఫైజ్ ను ఇంగ్లిష్, హిందీ అనువాదాల్లో, ఉర్దూలో అర్థం చేసుకోవడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తున్నాను. నాలుగైదు ఫైజ్ కవితలు తెలుగు చేశాను. ఫైజ్ మరణించినప్పుడు, అప్పుడప్పుడే ప్రారంభమైన ఉదయం దినపత్రిక ఆదివారం అనుబంధంలో ఫైజ్ మీద వ్యాసం రాశాను. ఇటీవలనే కన్నడ మిత్రురాలు ఎస్ బాగేశ్రీ ‘ప్రీతి మత్తు క్రాంతి’ అని వంద ఫైజ్ కవితల కన్నడ అనువాదం వెలువరించింది. ఆమె, ఆమె సహచరుడు భానుతేజ, తదితర మిత్రులతో కలిసి కూచుని ఫైజ్ కవితలు చదువుకున్న ఇరవై ఏళ్ల కిందటి రోజులు నిన్ననో మొన్ననో లాగున్నాయి. నా కవితాసంపుటం పా(వురం ముందుమాటలో ఫైజ్ ను సగౌరవంగా తలచుకున్నాను. అందుకే ఈ పుస్తకం చదువుతున్నప్పుడు ఎన్నోసార్లు గుండె గొంతుకలోన కొట్లాడింది, కంట తడి కదిలింది. అన్నిటికన్నా ముఖ్యంగా ఈ పుస్తకంలో వాహెద్ ఉటంకించిన కార్లో కొప్పోలా పేరు చూసి సంభ్రమం కలిగింది. కార్లో కొప్పోలా అమెరికాలో అనేక విశ్వవిద్యాలయాల్లో పనిచేసిన భాషా సాహిత్య అధ్యాపకుడు. ప్రగతిశీల ఉర్దూ సాహిత్యం మీద పరిశోధన చేశాడు. 1960లలోనే దక్షిణాసియా సాహిత్యం కోసం షికాగో నుంచి మహఫిల్ అనే ప్రామాణిక పత్రిక నడిపాడు. దాదాపు పదిహేనేళ్ల కింద ఇంటర్నెట్ పుణ్యమా అని పరిచయమై స్నేహితుడయ్యాడు. ఆక్స్ ఫర్డ్ యూనివర్సిటీ ప్రెస్ కరాచీ కోసం ప్రగతిశీల సాహిత్యధోరణుల మీద తాను సంపాదకత్వం వహించిన పుస్తకం కోసం నాతో తెలుగు విప్లవ సాహిత్యం మీద ఒక వ్యాసం రాయించాడు. 2008 నాటికి లాస్ ఆంజెలిస్ మ్యూజియం ఆఫ్ కాంటెంపరరీ ఆర్ట్ లో స్వచ్చంద గైడ్ గా ఉన్నాడు. ఆయనతో ఆ మ్యూజియంలో వనజా నేనూ ఒకరోజు గడిపినప్పుడు తన భారత అనుభవాలను గురించి, ఉర్దూ సాహిత్యం గురించి, ఫైజ్ అహ్మద్ ఫైజ్, ఇస్మత్ చుగ్తాయి, ఖురతులేన్ హైదర్, కైఫీ ఆజ్మీ వంటి దిగ్గజాల గురించి ఎన్నెన్నో గాథలు చెప్పాడు. వాహెద్, ఆ జ్ఞాపకాల తేనెటీగల తుట్టెను రేపినందుకు మరొకసారి కృతజ్ఞతలు Congratulations, thanks and best wishes Abdul Wahed for giving us the most needed and wonderful book - Socialist Sufi Faiz Ahmad Faiz - Life and Poetry. Perhaps this is the first book on Faiz in Telugu. This thought-provoking book triggered many nostalgic recollections in me. About thirty five years ago I first came to know about Faiz, his poetry and so many folklore stories around him through my departed friend C V Subba Rao. (One of those many stories was regarding Noorjahan singing a famous Faiz poem Mujh se pehalisi mohabbat, in spite of military general’s directive not to mention Faiz’s name since he was then in jail under Ayub Khan’s regime.) Since then till now I have been trying to understand Faiz in English and Hindi translations as well as in Urdu. I have translated a couple of his poems into Telugu. When Faiz died, I wrote an obituary in the Sunday supplement of Udayam daily. Recently my friend S Bageshree has published Preethi Mattu Kranthi, a translation of 100 poems of Faiz into Kannada. A group of friends including her and her companion N Bhanutej and I used to have poetry recitation sessions in which Faiz was a favourite. Though that was twenty years ago, it seems like yesterday. In my preface to my poetry collection Paavuram in 2002, I paid my tribute to Faiz. Thanks to all these memories, when I was reading Wahed’s book my heart leapt and my eyes became wet. Moreover, in this book Wahed also mentioned Carlo Coppola’s comment on Faiz and I felt amazed. A scholar of language and literature, Carlo Coppola worked in many US universities. He did his research on Urdu progressive literature and published a lot. During 1960s he began Mehfil, a classical journal of South Asian literature from Chicago. About 15 years ago I came to know about him, thanks to Internet, and we became friends. He made me write a piece on Telugu revolutionary literature for a volume he was editing on progressive and revolutionary trends in south Asian literature for Oxford University Press, Karachi. By 2008 he became a voluntary guide at Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Vanaja and I spent a day with him at the museum and he shared a number of interesting anecdotes during his research in India, Urdu literature, his experience with stalwarts like Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Ismat Chugtai, Qurratulain Haidar and Kaifi Azmi. Wahed, thanks again for hitting the hornet’s nest of those memories!
