Nice article, Now a days CMOS sensors are widely used. and regarding pixel and picture quality, Upto certain level increase in pixel count may increase picture clarity/sharpness but it is not always. infact in some cases more number of pixels will reduce the picture quality and it will also increase noise in the picture. To understand this we should know the complete mechanism of working of a camera like ISO,sensor size and pixel density etc. 1. If there are 2 sensors of same physical size but with different megapixels, one with low megapixel gives better picture in low light (or high ISO) as the pixel density is less and each individual pixel receive more light (info) on it. 2. Megapixel indicates resolving power of sensor only, even lens has got its own resolving power, a high resolution sensor coupled to a low res lens will result in low picture quality. 3. Actually pixel number tells us about how much large printout we can take from the camera but not exactly the quality of pic. More the megapixel more will be the print size and vice versa. for more info kindly refer dpreview or any other technical photography forums.
