Frightening. I see this being played out everyday in Thong Loh as I do the rounds, as I see posh places looking to be thriving one day and suddenly the next day the place is boarded up. My gut feeling is that business overall hasnt really been that good, especially for SMEs and my friends confirm this, except for the multinationals and the big players who seem to be doing very well. But for sure costs have gone up and this is another squeeze. The military has to perform to businesses expectations, otherwise people will long for the return of Thaksin. This is the significance of the waiting idea. But he is not really waiting; subversion is more like it. If the military doesnt produce results on corruption, stimulation of the economy, dispensing real justice, then theyd be useless in the long run. In the short run, they have produced peace and order, which has been rightfully much lauded. But eventually this would not be enough as Thais, especially the middle and working class, have become rather demanding, and expect a lot from those whom they have acceded complete power to. They have given up some of their freedom and now expect more than just peace in return. But the problem is militaries traditionally have not been shown to be development-capable, as much as peace-capable (except during the rule of Gen. Prem). They are not good at it, as the complexities of political and economic engineering are of a different kind to military problems. And so they have to rely on experts, some or many who could actually be Thaksins spies and mercenaries -- and Thaksin does have a lot of money. He and his crowd can literally buy his way just using the interest, the capital left untouched to grow. The recent Attorney- General case confirms this in the eyes of many.
