Amazon deploys fleet of robotic ‘elves’ NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Amazon Inc. does not yet have plans to integrate its delivery drones into its fulfillment centers, but the e-commerce giant has gradually been putting to work another type of robot. The company on Cyber Monday said it has deployed 15,000 Kiva robots in 10 U.S. fulfillment centers in an effort to shuffle around its AMZN, -3.73% tens of millions of inventory units and improve operations. The rollout of this so-called “eighth-generation fulfillment center” has been happening since the summer; but Monday’s announcement comes as the company ramps up deliveries to meet peak holiday demand. Seattle-based Amazon has also hired 80,000 temporary workers to meet the influx in orders. Also referred to internally as “Kiva elves,” the robots can lift up to 750 pounds.
