Examples of economic growth and progress can be witnessed every day in the capital but with this growth comes some negative effects such as increasing pollution. Vientiane Times asked residents for their thoughts on how to battle this growing problem for society. Mr Oudai Fanthaboun, a private company employee in Xaythany district: Vientiane is having a problem with pollution and it will happen more and more because people dont care enough about this issue. We always seem to be producing an ever increasing amount of pollution for the world. Everyone should pay attention and do their bit helping each other to reduce pollution such as by not disposing of waste illegally into waterways and public sewers. Ms Chandaeng, a student at National University of Laos: Garbage is a big problem in Vientiane, especially when they hold some festivals and the garbage left over results in bad pollution for the capital. Some people incorrectly think that burning the garbage is a good way to destroy it. Of course, many people do this but its not good for the environment because it causes air pollution. Ms Nitsakhone Xaiyachak, a government employee in Chanthabouly district: The use o f transportation is one of the main reasons for pollution and there are many vehicles running on the roads every day. People dont like to use public transport and instead like to use their own vehicles that adds to the problem. Some people are quite selfish using their vehicles because sometimes it produces a lot of smog but they still use them and dont care that its destroying nature and the environment. I hope that Vientiane will have a good public transport service such as buses and trains as this will help us to reduce the pollution from private vehicles. Ms Soulisa from Chanthabouly district: I think there are a lot of bad factories in Vientiane, especially the factories around the rural areas. They dont care that they are producing pollution into the air every day. The authorities should pay more attention to this problem and always check what emissions the factory produces and have strong regulations for them to make sure they are followed which will help us to protect the air and our environment. by Patithin Phetmeuangphuan (Latest Update December 22, 2014)
