Students in the Bachelor of Arts in Sociology degree at the Royal University of Phnom Penh examine the structures, processes and institutions of modern society, with a particular focus on developing the knowledge and skills to solve current social problems in Cambodia. As part of this degree, students examine youth issues, mass media communications, environmental issues, the impacts of international organizations and NGOs, and the impact of global tourism. The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree provides solid training in psychology for individuals who wish to alleviate the many social and mental problems prevalent in Cambodia. Vision The study of sociology, linking theoretical research to real situations, helps to establish the structures of current Cambodian social problems, and provides the necessary knowledge to work towards their solution. Sociological research assists the government and other organizations in addressing and improving all aspects of social development in Cambodia. The departments research on community development has already contributed to the generation of action plans that clarify the role of the government and NGOs in fostering speedy community development, and creating long-lasting relationships. Graduates of the Department of Sociology have the necessary resources to work in research and social development sectors of government and non-government organizations, as well as within private companies. Background Department of sociology at RUPP was instituted to aid in the rehabilitation of Cambodia, after two decades of conflict and civil war. The degree of Bachelor of Arts in Sociology was established in 1994 under the direction of the Ministry of Education, with assistance from the Italian NGO, New Humanity. It was established to equip Cambodian students with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist the government in making informed policy decisions and strategies for alleviating social problems in Cambodia. Initially, faculty from the Departments of Philosophy, History, Geography and Khmer Literature were retrained in sociology by specialists furnished by New Humanity, Italy. Since that time, graduates of the sociology program have also gone on to join the departmental staff. Over the past few years, faculty staff have been involved in research and training in conjunction with New Humanity, Italy and the Heinrich-Boll Foundation as well as other universities and NGOs, including World Vision, National University of Shishu and the Japan Institute of Labor. Admission Admission to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) is administered by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, based on sound results in the High School Certificate subjects of Khmer Literature and Mathematics. Assessment Students are assessed through attendance and class discussions, monthly tests, assignments and field work, as well as formal midterm and end of semester examinations. At the end of the first semester of their fourth year, students are required to submit a thesis proposal. If accepted they will continue to research and write the paper.
