My purpose is to give a broad overview of the topics we covered in the Space Voyage Camp, and the teaching philosophy of how we administered the lessons not only to engage the students, but also to ensure that they learned the material. Empowerment Firstly, we began with the Big Bang Theory of how our universe began. This can be a controversial issue, and so I felt that it was better to focus on the aspect that these are theories. It is imperative that the students understand that theories aren’t meant to be static or rigid. Science is a progressive endeavor, and so we tried to inculcate in the students that powerful notion that they may in fact be the ones responsible for helping us to make new theories that help us know more about the unknown vastness of our universe, and solve some of the problems in our world today. Theory and Practice: Following that, we learned about aircrafts, and rockets. I recognize that there have been some airplane tragedies recently, but I’ve always been fascinated by airplanes, and wanted to be an actual pilot. When a teacher is passionate about a subject, it helps in generating and transmitting enthusiasm to the students. It was great to witness the interest that the students displayed, and that this interest wasn’t limited to being gender specific. More importantly the students got to use an actual Flight Simulation System. They were able to see how theory meets practicality. Incidentally, I also think the summer camp is an avenue for the students to become exposed early to these kinds of subjects. They are at the tender age of when they’ll actually start to formulate their interests and even what they want to be when they grow up. Knowledge in Context: The students all learned about meteors, comets, The Milky Way, Apollo 13, constellations of stars, Inner and Outer Planets et al. We tried as much as we can within our creative capacities to teach these subjects within a context that acts as an aid for them in retaining this knowledge. For example when learning about rockets in the context of space exploration the students learned stories about the cold war, and the Sputnik crisis. These stories enriched the lessons we covered, and facilitated their memory of the material. It is important that the students remember what they learned because in this information age, knowledge is power. To that end, we introduced the students to visualization and mnemonic techniques to facilitate memorization of the vocabulary and topic covered. Individual Responsibilities Finally, as we learned more about our universe, an inevitable conclusion I believe is that one comes to an understanding that earth is a unique planet, and you gain a greater appreciation for its inherent conditions to support life. As such, we tried to foster a sense of care for the earth, which led us to discuss topics such as global warming, and the green house effect. In addition, the students learned about Earth Day, and what they themselves can do to avert or mitigate some of these phenomena by following the rules of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Thus, encouraging a sense of individual responsibility.
