뉴질랜드 국민 87%가 자신의 삶에 만족한다고 응답 한국은 한여름, 뉴질랜드는 이제 봄의 길목, 이런 차이 만큼이나 두 나라의 국민들이 느끼는 삶의 만족도가 다른 것 같다. 얼마 전에 한국은 국민의 70% 이상이 자신의 삶에 만족하지 못한다는 뉴스가 나왔는데 이번에 뉴질랜드 국민들은 국민 대다수가 행복하다고 느낀다는 통계 결과가 나왔다. 고교까지 전면 무상 교육, 고교까지 학용품이나 기타 생활에 필요한 물품 구입을 위한 보조금이 지급되고, 대학생들에게는 생활비가 무료로 지원되는 나라, 아프거나 다치면 무료로 치료해 주는 나라(감기 등 경미한 치료 제외), 실업자에게는 실업 수당과 주택 보조금이 지급되는 나라, 깨끗한..... 이런 혜택들이 사람의 마음을 여유롭게 해 주기 때문인지는 몰라도 참으로 삶의 만족도가 높다. 한국도 대다수 국민이 만족하는 삶을 살고 있다고 말 할 수 있는 나라, 실업자가 되어도 직업 알선이나 실업 수당이 제공 또는 대학이나 직업학교에서 무료 직업 교육을 받아서 미래를 개척할 수 있는 힘을 주는 나라가 하루 속히 되길 바라면서, 뉴질랜드 통계청의 결과를 간추려 올린다. 뉴질랜드 국민들은 사람들이 행복한 인생을 사는데 있어 돈은 한가지 조건일 뿐이며, 건강, 인간관계, 주택, 안정적인 생활에 필요한 충분한 돈이 함께 해야 진정한 행복이라고 여긴다. 뉴질랜드 통계청이 13일 발표한 2012년 뉴질랜드 일반 사회 조사 결과에 따르면 뉴질랜드 국민들의 87%가 자신들의 삶에 만족하거나 매우 만족한다고 결과가 나왔다. 통계청은 뉴질랜드 국민들의 만족도는 좋은 건강, 친교, 주거 환경, 충분한 돈 등이 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다며 생활의 측면에서 소득이 많은 사람일수록 삶에 대한 만족도도 높아질 가능성이 크다고 설명했다. 이 조사에서 좋은 건강, 충분한 돈, 좋은 주거 환경을 갖고 있고 외롭지 않을 정도의 친교활동을 하는 뉴질랜드 국민들은 5명 중 1명꼴이었으며, 이 사람들의 98%는 자신들의 삶에 만족, 또는 매우 만족한다고 응답했다. 그러나 전체 국민의 5%인20명 중 1명은 건강이나 주거 환경도 좋지 않고, 돈도 충분하지 않고, 조사 시점에서 지난 4주 동안 외로움도 느꼈다고 응답했으며, 이 사람들의 55%가 자신들의 삶에 만족, 또는 매우 만족한다고 응답해서 뉴질랜드들의 삶에 대한 만족도가 높은 것으로 밝혀졌다. 조사 책임자인 필립 워커는 "이 같은 삶의 만족도는 경제협력개발기구(OECD)의 평균치를 넘는 것으로 호주, 미국, 캐나다 등과 비슷하다"고 말했다. 또 이번 조사에서 뉴질랜드 국민들은 위급 상황에 대비하여 비상 식수나 의약품 등을 비축하는 비율이 2008년 조사에서는 40%였는데 이번 조사에서는 52%로 높아진 것으로 나타났다. 조사는 지난해 4월부터 12개월 동안 8천500여명을 인터뷰하는 방식으로 이루어졌으며, OECD의 복지 기준에 맞추어서 이루어졌다. Having good health, relationships, housing, and enough money strongly influence New Zealanders’ satisfaction with their lives overall. The more good outcomes people have in these aspects of their lives, the greater the likelihood they will be satisfied with their lives overall. In 2012, one-fifth of New Zealanders said they had good health, enough money, good housing, and didn’t feel lonely. Nearly all those people (98 percent) were satisfied or very satisfied with their lives overall. On the other hand, 1 in 20 (just over 5 percent) New Zealanders said they had neither good health, nor enough money, nor good housing, and said they had felt lonely in the past four weeks. Yet just over half (55 percent) of these people were satisfied or very satisfied with their lives overall. These findings come from the New Zealand General Social Survey (NZGSS) 2012, for which we interviewed 8,500 people over the 12 months from April 2012. This is above the OECD average, and similar to Australia, the United States, and Canada,” NZGSS manager Philip Walker said. Survey results also show that New Zealanders are better prepared for emergencies than they used to be. In 2012, 52 percent of people living in households had emergency water for three days, compared with 40 percent in 2008. “The increase in the Canterbury and Wellington regions is even starker, with Canterbury increasing from 34 percent to 69 percent and Wellington from 51 percent to 68 percent,” Mr Walker said. The NZGSS provides official statistics on social well-being that extend beyond traditional economic measures such as GDP. The survey aligns with the OECD well-being framework, so we can see how New Zealanders fare compared with other countries and over time. NZGSS 2012 is the third survey in the series.
