I was in a hurry then, and I made a few mistakes. 1. AARP vigorously supported Obamacare, and was instrumental in getting this boondoggle forced down the throats of the American people. Seniors are feeling this through higher premiums, and cost of health care services. The cost of my, and my wifes, health insurance increases each year, and since Ive enrolled in Medicare, the cost of some of my medications have increased from $10.00 [at local pharmacy] for a 90 day supply, to $80.00 [by mail pharmacy]. Getting them retail from a local pharmacy would be around $245.00 for the medications that I need. My wife has reached the Medicare age just yet; however, some of her medications are the same, and she gets them through the same mail pharmacy I do. I believe Obamacare is in dire need of being repealed, and starting over with a bipartisan approach to health care insurance. With this being sad, AARP is as much responsible for Obamacare being passed, as are the Democrats in the Senate, and President Obama. 2. Obviously the AARP isnt knowledgeable about the Fair Tax, and I cannot see why this is. I am one the seniors with the declining financial resources and increasing health care costs typical of older years that has a problem with our income based tax system; however, I feel the Fair Tax will benefit me, and I know of other seniors that believe the same way. I have someone prepare my taxes, and this year it cost me close to $900.00 for the service. My wife and I live on fixed incomes, and our income before taxes is about $50K/year. I believe we can put the money, for taxes taken out of our pension checks, to better use than the government, and the money spent on tax preparation each year can too; at least well be stimulating the economy through our purchases, rather than being wasted by Congress during the year. 3. In my opinion, AARPs mindset doesnt have the best interest of seniors, and Im not alone. On the issue of the Fair Tax, the AMAC seems to be right by your side. This is sad... Very sad indeed. Representatives of AARP have met with congressional members to discuss the need for federal tax reform. At present, the federal tax code is overly complex, inefficient, and imposes tremendous costs on the economy. The all-volunteer AARP Board of Directors has carefully considered the need for tax reform as part of our economic policy review process. The Board recommends that tax reform should focus on making the income tax more equitable, neutral, and efficient rather than moving to another type of system. This policy reflects our concern about the potential impact of widespread tax reform on a group as diverse as older Americans. > > A historic and abiding principle of the U.S. government revenue system has been to achieve a fair distribution of the personal income tax burden in line with people’s financial resources. The means to accomplish this is “progressive” taxation. A progressive system requires that people with greater incomes pay a higher percentage of that income in taxes than the percentage those with lower incomes pay. > > Yet even with a progressive or graduated income tax, an older person—especially one with the declining financial resources and increasing health care costs typical of older years—may have difficulty meeting their tax obligations. So, several provisions of the tax code try to ensure that the tax burden on older individuals is a little lighter. For example, older people benefit from a larger personal exemption, as well as the exemption of a portion—or all— of their Social Security income. Current law also provides a special tax credit for those lower-income elderly who qualify for little or no Social Security. One proposal in Congress is H.R. 25 - the Fair Tax Act, which would replace all federal income taxes with a single broad national consumption tax on retail. Various “flat tax” proposals would eliminate all these considerations. > > In addition, a shift to the “Fair Tax” or any consumption tax would create a double burden of taxation on retirees. Having been taxed on income during their working years, they would then confront a tax on spending in their consuming years. > > Due to these concerns, AARP is not endorsing the Fair Tax Act. Yet, I do want to emphasize our continuing interest in reforming the federal tax system. The Association supports carefully examining the tax code for further changes and refinements consistent with the goal of a progressive, equitable, and universal tax code for all Americans. We are determined to work with all interested parties to develop the broad consensus necessary to make our federal tax system both fair and simple.
