--Operation Market Garden Day 3 Update: Sep. 19, 1944-- The operation is decidedly behind schedule, with the armored column still south and many German units away from its scheduled arrival at Arnhem Bridge today. -Arnhem, British Sector: Paratroopers from main body try and fail to break through German lines in Arnhem to Col. Frost and his 600 men at Arnhem Bridge, but fail. Gen. Urquhart makes it back to his HQ in Oosterbeek only to find that the men at the bridge and his own men have been entirely cut off and surrounded by German forces. Germans begin intensive bombardment of Col. Frosts men at Arnhem Bridge, aiming to destroy the buildings they are holed up in. -Nijmegen, 82nd AB Sector: 82nd AB units make contact with armored column at Grave while Germans continue to disrupt the landing zones in Groesbeek. British tanks and American paratroopers attempt to take Nijmegen Bridge late in the day but are repulsed. -Eindhoven, 101st AB Sector: German tanks counterattack along the highway route, shelling the bailey bridge at Son before being repulsed. German planes again bomb Eindhoven, killing 200 Dutch civilians and disrupting the columns supply route.
