- Yesterday, five BRAVE La Trobe University students peacefully occupied the Vice Chancellor’s office, calling upon the VC to oppose the Abbott government’s deregulation of university fees and demanding #freeeducation. It was a fitting tribute to #GoughWhitlam and I am very pleased to have been able to support them by providing a legal briefing on behalf of Melbourne Activist Legal Support and acting as police liaison. The action received a HUGE response on social media and was acknowledged in Adam Bandts speech in parliament yesterday commemorating Gough. It was a well organised action and the group was (for the most part) treated courteously and respectfully by the staff, security and the police. After about five hours of occupation, the students were able to negotiate an agreement with the university that they not be charged with trespass under section 9(1)(d) of the Summary Offences Act 1966 (Vic). https://youtube/watch?v=Dl7WTWEDqJQ — with Jacob Grech and 7 others at La Trobe University.
